I still don't see why it is so hard to carry a regular macbook around...they are pretty damn small as it is guys...

The only reason people defend this laptop is because they like how it looks, i'll stick to my plain old regular macbook.

How "portable" is this laptop, really? It's lighter, sure, and it's what, like half an inch thinner than a regular MacBook? But despite its thinness, it still has a 13.3" screen, so if I want to carry it around I'm still going to need basically the same size bag as I would if I had a regular MacBook.

I just don't understand why anyone would EVER buy a MacBook Air over a regular MacBook, when in my opinion there is nothing better about an Air (save for the thickness/weight... woohoo?). MBA vs a new MacBook, MacBook is faster, has more USB ports, actually HAS an ethernet port, has a hard drive bigger than 80gb (honestly now? 80gb? I could buy an iPod that holds more than that), has better speakers, has an optical drive, has a replaceable battery and is easy to change or add RAM to.

Okay fine, so sure the MacBook Air looks sleek and nice and aesthetically attractive, and unlike me, not all people use 4 or 5 USB ports at a time and can get by with one USB port and no optical drive... But in my opinion, the actual technical specs of the MacBook Air do NOT make it worth even the base $1800 it costs. I could take $500 and go out and buy a better computer made by Acer and stick Ubuntu Linux (simply because I'm not a Windows fan) on it or something and be a thousand times happier and have $1300 left over to buy myself, oh, I don't know, a trip to Europe or something.

Conclusion: Waste of money. I don't care what anyone else says.

It is interesting to see all the flame bait that comes after someone publishes an article attacking products by apple
-
but in my opinion its not really a good idea to judge a product based on its specs alone.
-
I'm a PC/Mac user... generally I find that macs tend to perform better under lower specs compared to a PC; I feel that a 2GB ram and 1.6Ghz processor isn't that slow... an iBook G4 with 1.33Ghz processor/1Gb ram runs MacOSX Leopard quite fast as well, and outperforms the newer Vista PC's with 1GB ram and 2Ghz DC processors
-
and with regard to the Optical drive issue, I actually never ever use cds in my laptop computer while on the move, and if i really need to use one I can use a disk image utility(e.g. daemon tools) or the build in mac disk-utility(which makes it really easy to make disk images)
-
mono speakers? - use headphones. most laptops, even those with "stereo speakers" produce horrible sound quality from the build in speakers. a few exceptions (such as HP-compaq) can be found, but they tend to drain battery very fast.
-
with regard to the USB,one would likely use a Ultraportable-laptop USB port for:
1. Mouse (Not needed, the multi-touch trackpad is really good, its even possible to play FPS games with it)
2. Usb flash drives(how many do you usually plug-in, not more than 1 I assume)
3. Ethernet(most stuff is wireless now)
4. Camera(now that is one thing i feel is a missing feature in the macs - a camera card reader... since macs are targeted towards the media professionals
-
I don't own a Macbook Air myself, but I have tried one belonging to some of my friends, and I can say it is a very study well built machine, despite its flimsy look
-
However I do agree... the price doesn't make sense, besides paying for the laptop, one also has to pay for the Superdrive, the magsafe -airline adapter(if you need long distance flights)
-
so unless i really really need the ultra-portability I would not buy it, not until the specs become reasonable enough to justify the price, or the price goes down(which is quite likely as technology improves)
-
anyway for those who feel apple's products are overpriced , take a look at the Sony Vaio. they're using the same marketing strategy(superior hardware and form over specifications), and their products cost way more than apple's, but no one is bashing them.

I don't see the point to a mac ata ll, none less the air. The main problem with mac's is the demographics of yuppies who think that because they are using a mac they are instant art majors. I had my first digital animation class today and everyone busted out their laptops and the girl next to me looks at my Toshiba Satellite and laughs at me; she had an air. Too bad my Satellie cost about $450 compared to a less spec $1200 air. I really think all Apple products are general gimmicks and the mac OS isn't an improvement either over Windows. Those who have Windows crashes are doing something wrong, very much wrong. I've power used Windows for gaming, programming, and animation for a long time, mostly on an outdated Compaq Armada M700 running XP Pro! I have had one Windows crash, and it was because I PURPOSELY decided to see how many windows my system could support at one time, which was 82 IE7 windows with my Windows Live homepage.

Also, being a mod enthusist, I like multiple ports, docks, and drives which the air doesn't have. Hell, the air is time locked, and once people realize that they will have to buy macbook air 2.0 for $1200+ more! My Toshiba Satellite can support my AMD Quad core 9300 and up to 8Gb of ram as well as my sweet ATI X1700 graphics card. The mac, well, maxes at 2 Gb ram and 1.6 Ghz dual core. Lame as hell. Expandablility is the name of the computing game, and if the system costs $1200, it better last a long fucking time or else its just a waste of money and time.

If it wasnt the Macbook Air is so pricey, then its a nice innovation

the specs do suck big time, all you are paying for is the design and i doubt any power users would even consider paying good money for a laptop with crappy specifications
